The visual prosthetic device was (as many fans have suspected) 
based on a womanÕs hair clip. Gene Roddenberry selected this simple design 
from literally dozens developed for the prop because of his concepts that 
24th-century technology should reflect its extraordinary sophistication by an 
equally extraordinary simplicity of design. The original hair clip was donated 
to the show by Kiku Annon, a researcher at UCLA.  Æ
