The device at far left in drawer 1 was a replica of Dr. McCoyÕs spinning ÒFeinbergerÓ scanner from the first Star Trek series. Most of the medical props on Star Trek: The Next Generation were designed by Rick Sternbach, who often helped to stretch the showÕs prop budget by designing props based on existing 20th-century tools. Many of the medical props built for Star Trek: The Next Generation were used for a variety of functions, depending on the needs of individual scripts. This means that a Òlaser scalpelÓ this week might be a ÒDNA scannerÓ next week. This was an unfortunate result of limitations in the prop budget, although property masters Alan Sims and Joe Longo did their best to keep things as consistent as possible. Æ
