COMMAND STATIONS The Main Bridge command stations provide seating and information displays for the Commanding Officer (normally the captain) and two other officers, typically the First Officer and the counselor. The command stations are centrally located, designed to maximize interaction with all key bridge personnel, while permitting an unobstructed view of the main screen. The captainÕs chair features armrests that incorporate miniaturized status displays, and simplified Conn and Ops controls. Upon keyboard or vocal command, the captain can use these controls to override the basic operation of the spacecraft. Such overrides are generally reserved for emergency situations. The other two seating positions in the command area include somewhat larger information display terminal screens, which permit these officers to access and manipulate data as part of their duties. Cruise Mode operating rules require a shift Commanding Officer to be on duty at all times, although the presence of other command personnel is optional, depending on specific mission requirements. Yellow and Red Alert operating rules generally require the presence of at least two command personnel, in addition to Conn and Ops. Æ
