Mike actually spent a fair amount of time trying to come up with a graphic 
Òuser interfaceÓ that would be the design basis of the various control panels 
on the ship. His design goal was to create a visual style that suggests an 
extremely simple means of organizing and controlling very complex 
processes and hardware. However, a closer examination of the actual 
panels used on our soundstages would reveal that many of the buttons and 
indicators are labeled with the initials of members of the Star Trek
